Merchandiser Job Description
A merchandiser plays a vital role in the success of a fashion retail business. Working closely with buying, design and commercial teams, merchandisers use sales data, trends and customer insight to ensure the right products are available in the right stores or online, at the right time.
The role is highly analytical and commercially focused. Merchandisers are responsible for planning and managing stock, monitoring sales performance and making decisions that help maximise sales while protecting profit and minimising excess stock.
Depending on the size and structure of the business, a merchandiser may be responsible for a specific product category, department, channel or geographical area.

A Merchandiser’s Core Responsibilities
Range Planning
Working alongside the buying team to plan the range, deciding how much stock is required and ensuring the assortment meets customer demand.
Sales & Stock Analysis
Regularly reviewing sales, stock levels, sell-through and profit performance to identify opportunities and potential issues.
Forecasting
Using historical data, current trading performance, market trends and commercial insight to forecast future sales and determine stock requirements.
Stock Management
Ensuring the right amount of stock is available in the right locations at the right time, while minimising the risk of overstock and markdowns.
Budget & Financial Management
Managing sales, intake and stock budgets and monitoring performance against agreed financial targets.
Allocation & Replenishment
Working with allocation and supply chain teams to ensure products are distributed effectively across stores and online channels, with stock replenished where demand is strongest.

Progression
Merchandising offers excellent opportunities for career progression within fashion and retail. Once you have gained experience in merchandising administration and developed your understanding of sales, stock and financial management, you can progress through to assistant merchandiser, merchandiser and senior merchandiser roles.
With experience, you may move into merchandising management, category management or head-of-function roles. At senior level, you could be responsible for the commercial performance of a major department or category, managing significant budgets and leading a team of merchandisers.
Merchandising can also provide opportunities to move into wider commercial roles, including buying and merchandising management, trading, planning and commercial leadership.
