Retail Job Description

Retail professionals are responsible for delivering excellent customer service while supporting the commercial and operational performance of a store or retail business. Depending on the role, responsibilities can include serving customers, achieving sales targets, managing stock, merchandising products, handling deliveries and supporting day-to-day store operations.

As you progress, retail roles become increasingly focused on leadership and commercial performance. Store managers and senior retail leaders are responsible for recruiting and developing teams, managing budgets and targets, analysing sales performance and ensuring the customer experience reflects the brand.

A Retail Professional’s Core Responsibilities

Customer Service

Creating a positive customer experience, understanding customer needs and providing knowledgeable advice about products and the brand.

Sales & Target Management

Working towards individual and store sales targets, identifying opportunities to increase sales and using commercial information to improve performance.

Stock Management

Receiving deliveries, maintaining accurate stock levels, replenishing products and supporting stock control to ensure customers can find the products they want.

Visual Merchandising

Presenting products effectively in line with brand guidelines, seasonal campaigns and commercial priorities to maximise customer engagement and sales.

Team Support & Leadership

Supporting colleagues, sharing product knowledge and, at management level, recruiting, training, motivating and developing retail teams.

Store Operations

Helping to ensure the store runs smoothly, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, health and safety, loss prevention and operational standards.

Commercial Performance

Monitoring sales, conversion, average transaction value and other performance measures to understand what is working and where improvements can be made.

Customer & Brand Experience

Representing the brand and ensuring that the store environment, service and customer journey reflect the company’s values and standards.

Progression

Retail offers a clear and accessible route into management for people who are enthusiastic about fashion, customers and commercial performance. Many careers begin as a Retail Assistant or Sales Advisor, with progression into Senior Sales Advisor, Supervisor and Assistant Store Manager positions.

With experience, you can progress to Store Manager, taking responsibility for the performance of an entire store, including sales, stock, staffing, customer experience and operational standards.

Experienced Store Managers can move into Area or Cluster Management, overseeing multiple stores and supporting several management teams. From there, opportunities can include Regional Manager, Head of Retail and Retail Director positions.

Retail can also be a great stepping stone into other areas of the fashion industry. Depending on your interests and experience, you may move into visual merchandising, retail operations, training and development, buying, merchandising, ecommerce, customer experience or head-office roles.
