To work in Fashion and Retail as a Fashion Designer you will usually have at least 3 years of fashion design experience, having progressed through the levels of Design Assistant and then Junior/Assistant Fashion Designer. Fashion Designers often report into the fashion or retail company's Senior Fashion Designer as opposed to the Design Manager/Director and often manage a Design Assistant or Junior/Assistant Fashion Designer.

The job of fashion Designer will include researching fashion trends, designing the fashion and retail ranges, as well as souring fabric and trims whether this is for womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, fashion accessories, footwear, or lingerie.

A proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator is often a pre-requisite for Fashion Designers looking to progress within the fashion and retail industry.
