Fabric Technologist

The job role of a Fabric Technologist involves carrying out a range of technical, investigative and quality control work on clothing and textiles, ensuring that quality, ethical & legal standards are met. A Fabric Technologist's role within the fashion industry is to assess whether the fabrics are within the capabilities of machinery, costings and the capabilities of the fabric.

Fabric Technologists within a fashion / retail company will work on the development of fabrics, improve quality and fit for purpose, and liaise with those involved in the bulk manufacturing process. Fabric Technologists work with a wide range of fabrics, including synthetic and natural textiles.

As a Fabric Technologist your job role will involve providing fabric technical support to the design and/or production team, carrying out colour testing of fabrics and approving lab dips, sourcing fabrics and trims, developing new fabrics based on fashion trends and working closely with the fabric mills, undertaking quality evaluations of materials and checking the quality of the final product, whether it is womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, fashion accessories, footwear, or lingerie.

To get a job in fashion as a Fabric Technologist you will enter in at graduate level, following completion of a relevant successful fabric/textile fashion degree, to be employed as an Assistant Fabric Technologist where you can work your way up to eventually become a Fabric Technologist within a successful fashion / retail company.
