Design, Production and Technical Graduate advice

Design, Production and Technical Graduate advice

We speak to graduates every day, advising them on what to expect when applying for their first job within their desired field. Here are our top tips on how to secure a permanent job or further placements in 2025:

  • Complete an internship within your desired field with a supplier, high street retailer, or brand if possible. Even for entry-level roles, 6–12 months of industry experience is ideal.

  • If you’re looking to get into design, your portfolio is key. Work on personal projects that are commercial and aimed at the high street market – include trend boards, shapes, colours, fabrics, prints, and tech packs. Digital formats are perfectly acceptable.

  • Entry-level design roles in 2025 typically start at around £25,000.

  • Have your CV in both PDF and Word format. Keep it concise – bullet points, key achievements, and relevant experience work best.

  • Include all computer packages you used during university or internships, e.g., Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Gerber, CLO3D, etc. Strong IT skills are expected.

  • Be open-minded – the priority is getting your first foot in the door.

  • Be persistent – apply, apply, apply! Keep track of applications and follow up where appropriate.

  • Network actively – attend industry events, talks, and student fairs. Connect with professionals on LinkedIn and follow fashion brands to stay informed about opportunities.

  • Show commercial awareness – understand who your target customers are and what’s selling in the market. Employers value designers who think beyond just aesthetics.

  • Keep learning – experiment with new techniques, software, or sustainable practices. The fashion industry moves fast, and showing you are proactive sets you apart.

  • Seek feedback – don’t be afraid to ask tutors, mentors, or industry contacts to review your work and portfolio. Constructive critique will help you grow.

  • Document your projects – maintain clear notes on design decisions, inspiration, materials, and technical development. This demonstrates professional approach and organisational skills.
