A Day in the Life of a CEO & Technical Director

My typical week (day, actually) always begins with email enquiries. Depending on the product query, various video calls and meetings have to be arranged — according to whatever time zone, so sometimes calls are at 4am and Zombie mode is definitely on! — to discuss the customer requirement or supplier concerns. Sample reviewing, advising on technical and quality solutions, and liaising throughout with our customers. Contract agreements, payments, audit planning, and so on.

Travelling to factories is always a favourite part of my week; I like to be hands-on, where I am most comfortable with the processes, the product and the factory personnel. Being able to mix business with travel really is the icing on the cake.

During my previous role as Global Compliance Executive Director, I had the challenge of ensuring that compliance was adhered to throughout our extensive supply-partner portfolio. After the inevitable consolidation phase, our supply partners became more aware of the importance of compliance. They were fully engaged and took pride in their own progress, working closely alongside our in-country teams for support and guidance in preparing for external third-party audits. For myself and our company, we had reassurance that we were truly sourcing ethically, and our customers also gained confidence. We were also nominated for an ethical award from a major UK retailer, which was a huge achievement and one that we all were humbled yet extremely proud to have received. One for the career treasure chest.

Ensure that you start from a junior position and take time to fully learn the ropes. Pattern making and being able to sew myself has been a godsend for me. Be flexible, as the customer requirement can and will change — yet also be honest. Whilst the philosophy of “the customer is always right” is correct, they do not always have the most practical approach; that is where we step in, with our expertise. Think lean, to cut cost wherever possible without compromising on design and quality. Maintain your personal integrity and transparency — never, ever compromise your own reputation, and that of your company. Everyone you come into contact with throughout your career — whether a colleague, supplier or customer — will remember your values. Remember, it's a small world out there.

Interiors — which I love. I studied soft furnishing and upholstery for eight years, and have always carried that knowledge with me. I love Pinterest. I have been fortunate enough to combine interiors in business too, but to be honest I have a passion for both fashion and interiors.

I would buy colouring books and crayons, craft accessories, and donate to a children's orphanage in Sri Lanka. Children love to get creative and they have a different perception on life — a life of only happiness, and in colour. It is adorable and so rewarding to watch and understand their vision come to life.
